Film as Art Empty Film as Art

Film and video programs are efforts at communicating and just like speaking English, tapping out Morse code, or waving semaphores, there is a whole language that can be learned including words, phrases, grammar, punctuation, rules, and common practices. And like any other language, the more thoroughly you master it, the more effectively you can communicate.

While the writer conceives the story, and the director realizes it, it is you, the editor who is the storyteller; given the task of organizing the thoughts and ideas and transmitting the intended message to the audience.

Communication is both an art and a craft. Part inspiration and part perspiration. Effective editing requires both aspects, and while you can't necessarily be taught the art of eloquence, you can study and practice the rules of the language, and hone your craft so you can edit quicker, more efficiently, and communicate more effectively because of it.

Film Literacy is essentially familiarizing oneself with these elements. It is not something that should be exclusive to filmmakers and film critics. Through film literacy, audience develop a deeper appreciation and better understanding of the medium. Eventually, with a more film literate Filipino audience, would see more quality films produced and screened in our cinemas.

In our current generation, filming is very common specially on millennials who took their filming career seriously even if they don't really took a degree in filming. Every one can be a filmmaker. That only means that filming is one of the most common hobby/career on our current generation. That means that filming has a very large impact on our society now.

A quote about the “death of the film criticism” from the interview:
“As long as there’s art, there’s a need to make sense of it. As long as we’re talking about a bourgeois culture like the one we — nominally — live in right here and now. It’s that simple. Mind: “Make sense of it”

Technically literature is classed as 'the arts', but when we think of art we usually mean 'visual art'. Filmmakers very much apply artistic principles to their movies in the form of imagery and sound, as well as including elements from literature/performance and also music.

Films are considered as art, but what could be the benefits of being a film literate aside from the fact that you'd have film appreciation?

Say that a film has a "bad" storyline or plot, but the director and the editor who worked in it are good in their jobs, would it still be possible for the film to thrive and be considered as good though the story itself is not?

I do agree with this comment--ALMOST everyone COULD be a filmmaker, however, it doesn't necessarily mean that they can be a GOOD filmmaker. A film career is something more substantial than mere creating films for the sake of the hobby, although if one would study and apply the basics and essentials of filmmaking, creating a good film might be even possible. Concluding that filming is the most common hobby or career in our generation without sufficient data or evidence is very hasty and uncareful. Films and filming has not only been influential in our society now, it's always been influential ever since, especially those golden days of films when blockbuster films are being produced every week in our country during the 1930's to late 1940's.

Aside from the things that you have mentioned in your post Sir, what else are the things that you know or understand about films and filmmaking? Would you say that you're a film literate? If so, what are the best films that you have watched, say from the classics--from the pioneers of filmmaking?
